Dispatches from the world's best bars.

A little something I’ve been experimenting with at home lately: the Tex Mex Old Fashioned. The base spirit is the unusual Brimstone corn whiskey made by Texas’s Balcones Distillery, which is smoked using Texas Scrub Oak rather than Scottish peat and tastes shockingly like tortillas and brisket. In this version I used both aromatic bitters and Bittermen’s Molé Bitters, but I think I might just forgo the aromatic biters in the future because the molé flavor works so well. I decided to top the whole thing off with a flamed orange peel as a garnish, which complements the smokey flavor perfectly. All in all, a pretty successful effort—I bet you’ll see variations of it on a lot of bar menus soon.

I think next up I want to try using the Brimstone in a Blood & Sand variation.
